Develop Success: A one-day workshop on developing successful web projects

All web projects arise out of a business need, and a set of principles guiding how that need should be met. Understanding these needs and principles, and fostering them coherently through the design and development process, is what distinguishes successful projects from less successful ones.

This one-day workshop is designed to provide a hands-on overview of a successful project, and the steps that result in one. Taking a step-by-step approach, where the results of one step feed into the next, each piece of the overall need is evaluated and matched to web development strategies. These strategies make up a single coherent whole. This coherent whole becomes a fully functioning web application or site, fully able to tackle today’s challenges and evolve to meet future ones.

What will the workshop cover?

The workshop will consist of 4 90-minute sessions. Each session combines visual presentation, discussion and hands-on activities.

  1. Analyzing your needs and guiding principles. Can your need be addressed by building a new web application/site? Or can it perhaps be addressed more simply? We look at where you want to be and how you want to get there, to determine the best approach to meeting your needs through web technology. All business needs are considered: marketing, customer support, financial, long-term strategy, and more.
  2. Use cases and information architecture. Determine who will be using your new web application, and what they are attempting to achieve. Then build the basic framework of a solution that optimally meets their needs as well as yours.
  3. The science and art of design. Web design is not eye candy. Each pixel of your site needs to address the needs of you and your users. It needs to help direct attention, impart information, and communicate emotions. Ensuring that your designer understands the project’s priorities, and is designing to address those priorities, will enable you to oversee the design of a successful project.
  4. Web production for non-programmers, and final QA. Once your project leaves the design phase and gets taken over by the programmers, that’s the last you see of it for a while. What’s happening with it? How can I know that the project is proceeding as it should? By turning your use cases and information architecture into a firm set of production requirements, you will know that the programmers are working to meet your underlying business needs. You also have a clear guide for how to QA the final product to make sure all the requirements have been met, and that your project will be successful.
